Debbie Kanter

Consultant Counselling Psychologist Specialist Eating Disorders

Therapy In-Person or Online £210

Debbie is a highly experienced Consultant Counselling Psychologist with over 25 years of clinical practice, specialising in the treatment of eating disorders. She is a trusted expert in supporting individuals and families affected by anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other specified eating difficulties, having worked extensively across both NHS and private practice settings.

Debbie began her career as a community pharmacist but soon discovered her passion for therapeutic work, retraining as a counselling psychologist. She spent more than 21 years at the internationally renowned Maudsley Hospital, initially in general adult mental health before focusing her career within the Eating Disorders Unit. At the Maudsley, she served as Clinical Lead for group therapy and for the treatment of co-morbid diabetes and eating disorders. She also founded and ran the honorary psychology trainee programme, teaching and supervising doctoral students, contributed to pioneering research including the development of the MANTRA model, and lectured at the Institute of Psychiatry.

Since 2021, Debbie has been Head of Eating Disorders at Noa Girls, where she established and continues to develop a dedicated service for the assessment and treatment of eating disorders. She leads on clinical care, supervises her team, and ensures a compassionate, patient-centred approach. Alongside this, Debbie runs a successful private practice, treating both adolescents and adults with eating disorders and related difficulties such as anxiety, depression, autism, ADHD, and self-harm. She also works closely with families and carers, offering guidance and support throughout the recovery journey.

Debbie remains connected to the NHS as a mentor with Health Education England, Kings College Hospital, and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust on the Eating Disorders Services Adult Whole Team (EDSA) training programme.

Her therapeutic work is guided by NICE recommendations, using first-line evidence-based approaches including CBT-E (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders), MANTRA, SSCM (Specialist Supportive Clinical Management), and FT-AN (Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa). She combines these with other approaches to create a flexible, collaborative, and compassionate style tailored to each client’s needs.

Outside of her professional life, Debbie is an enthusiastic skier who loves the mountains, as well as tennis, hiking, and spending time with her five children. She enjoys entertaining, exploring new restaurants, going to the theatre, and also finds joy in quieter moments reading, playing the piano, or watching films.
Debbie is fully registered as a Chartered Counselling Psychologist (CPsychol), an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS), and with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
