Emily Backhouse
Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist
Therapy In-Person or Online £95
My name is Emily, I am an integratively trained Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with over 10 years of experience working with children, teenagers, young adults, and families in community, charity, and educational settings as well as the NHS. I have a background in youth work and extensive experience supporting young people with complex needs, including behavioural challenges, trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, disordered eating, suicidal ideation, and disengagement from education, family and society.
My approach is client-centred, trauma-informed, and relational. Which means I work at the pace that’s right for my clients, creating a safe, authentic, and supportive space to explore their inner worlds alongside them with care and respect. I understand the courage it takes to open-up in therapy and I offer a non-judgemental, confidential, and compassionate space to reflect, think, and move forward with confidence and empowerment.
Being integratively trained means, I work flexibly, using the approach best suited to each person whether that's play, creative arts, sand tray work, or talking therapy. With children and young people, I like to work holistically where possible, valuing the system around child such as family members, carers, social workers, and schools — and working collaboratively to address my client’s needs.
I offer short-term, long-term, and open-ended psychotherapy and counselling to children (aged 4–12), teenagers (13–19), young adults (20–25), adults (25+), and parents, either in person or online. Sessions are 50 minutes and take place weekly.
Choosing the right therapist and embarking on this journey for yourself or your child can be overwhelming. I take great care to guide children, young people and families through the assessment process in a culturally sensitive and inclusive way.
I hold a Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling and Counselling Skills from Birkbeck, University of London, and a Master's degree in Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy from Terapia, Middlesex University.
